The Revolutionary Material Behind Our Air France Airbus A380 Edition

Shining Light on Glare: Crafting the Air France A380 Aviationtag Collection

In the realm of aviation enthusiasts, the allure of owning a piece of aircraft history is unmatched. Today, we're thrilled to introduce our latest addition to the Aviationtag family: the Air France Airbus A380 Edition. But what truly sets this release apart isn't just the iconic aircraft it represents; it's the revolutionary material it's crafted from: Glare.

For the first time ever, we've delved into the world of Glare, a state-of-the-art fiber metal laminate (FML) that marries layers of aluminum with S-2 glass-fiber pre-preg. This innovative material offers unparalleled durability, corrosion resistance, and fire resistance compared to conventional aluminum. However, what truly distinguishes Glare is its remarkable damage tolerance behavior, making it an ideal choice for scenarios involving impact and metal fatigue.

But the story of Glare goes beyond its mechanical properties. Developed by Dutch company Akzo Nobel in 1987, Glare's journey to prominence was paved with years of research and development. Much of this groundwork was laid at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Delft University of Technology, where pioneering professors and researchers advanced the knowledge of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) and earned several patents.

In 2007, Glare entered major application when the Airbus A380 airliner began commercial service. With Glare contributing 485 square meters of material to each A380 plane, its usage resulted in significant weight savings, contributing to the aircraft's operational efficiency.

Despite its remarkable properties and contributions to aviation, Glare's future is uncertain following Airbus's decision to end production of the A380 in 2021. Unless selected for another aircraft manufacturing program, Glare may cease volume production, marking the end of an era in aerospace engineering.

Our journey with the Air France A380 Edition wasn't merely about adding another collectible to our lineup; it was a journey of embracing innovation and pushing the boundaries of aircraft upcycling. We had to reimagine our production processes from the ground up to accommodate Glare, ensuring that each Aviationtag crafted from this material upholds our rigorous standards of quality and craftsmanship.
