Aviationtag x DHL Express: Giving the D-ALEW a Second Life

A New Chapter for the D-ALEW

At Aviationtag, we are passionate about preserving aviation history by transforming retired aircraft into unique collectibles. Our latest release, the Aviationtag x DHL Express D-ALEW, is the third and final edition in our DHL Express Boeing 757 trilogy. This exclusive plane tag was crafted from the fuselage of the Boeing 757-200F D-ALEW, an aircraft that played a vital role in DHL Express’ global logistics operations.

Second life for D-Alew
From British Airways to DHL Express

The Boeing 757-200 that would become D-ALEW was originally built in 1988 and delivered to British Airways under the registration G-BMRC. Named "Rochester Castle", the aircraft operated in British Airways' fleet until January 1998, when it received a special "Teaming up for Britain" livery to promote the UK’s support for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

In 2003, DHL Express acquired the aircraft and converted it into a dedicated freighter (757-200F). During its DHL Express service, D-ALEW also bore a "Formula One Official Logistics Partner" sticker from October 2004 to January 2011, reflecting its role in supporting the global motorsport circuit. After years of
reliable service, the aircraft was retired in 2018 and stored in Castellón, Spain, before being dismantled in 2019 alongside its sister aircraft, D-ALEH and D-ALEK.

The D-ALEW Edition
From Aircraft to Collectible

Transforming an aircraft into an aircraft tag is an intricate process that breathes new life into aviation history. The fuselage of D-ALEW was carefully selected and
transported to our Cologne-based manufactory, where it was cleaned, cut, and stamped into the iconic Aviationtag shape. A standout feature of this edition is the DHL Express logo, which appears on an Aviationtag for the first time. Each tag is then laser-engraved with the aircraft type, registration, and edition number, ensuring that every piece is a one-of-a-kind collector’s item.

THE MAKING OF VIDEO
The cargo workhorse
The Boeing 757-200F

The Boeing 757, introduced in the early 1980s, was originally designed as a narrow-body, mid-range passenger aircraft. It quickly became a favorite among airlines due to its fuel efficiency, advanced aerodynamics, and range capabilities. However, its true potential was unlocked with the development of the 757-200PF (Package Freighter) and 757-200F (Freighter) variants, specifically designed for cargo operations.

The conversion from a 757-200 passenger aircraft to a 757-200F freighter, as seen with D-ALEW, involves extensive modifications. Passenger windows are sealed, a large cargo door is installed, and the interior is completely restructured to accommodate shipping containers. These modifications made the aircraft a reliable choice for express freight carriers like DHL Express, FedEx, and UPS.

With a maximum payload of nearly 39,000 kg and a range of over 5,800 km, the 757-200F became a crucial part of global supply chains. Its ability to operate from shorter runways made it highly versatile, ensuring fast and efficient delivery of goods.
