Aviationtag and Jota Aviation: The Story Behind the BAe 146 G-SMLA Edition
Jota Aviation, established in 2009, became a key player in the charter airline sector, particularly for the motorsport industry. As part of the Jota Group, which also includes the renowned Jota Sport racing team, it specialized in providing tailored aviation services for racing teams, sporting clubs, and cargo operations. However, after a period of success, Jota Aviation ceased operations in 2022 due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit-related disruptions.
One of the most notable aircraf in Jota Aviation’s fleet was the BAe 146 G-SMLA, which had a storied career in both the aviation and motorsport worlds. Delivered in 1985 to PSA (Pacific Southwest Airlines), the aircraft later served US Air and was eventually sold to several European carriers, including Croatia Airlines, CityJet, and Flightline.
In 2014, it joined Jota Aviation, where it was utilized for special chartered flights, primarily related to motorsports.

The connection between Jota Aviation and Jota Sport is key to understanding the significance of G-SMLA. Jota Sport, one of the most successful sports car racing teams in recent years, has competed in prestigious events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, FIA World Endurance Championship, and the GT World Challenge Europe. Their impressive achievements, including multiple podium finishes at Le Mans, earned Jota Sport a legendary status in motorsports. G-SMLA, with its long history and unique connection to motorsport, became more than just a plane for Jota Aviation — it was a symbol of the team’s dedication to high performance and success, both in the sky and on the racetrack.
In 2020, G-SMLA was stored, and by 2024, it was time for the aircraft to be recycled. The BAe 146’s cargo door, however, had another purpose: it would be repurposed into Aviationtags, creating a direct link between aviation history and motorsport. We discovered G-SMLA at Kemble Airport in the UK, and its combination of vibrant colors and motorsport ties inspired us to create a special edition that merges these two worlds.
The result is the limited edition Aviationtag made from the very aircraft that once served racing teams and carried out special charters for Jota Aviation. With its fascinating backstory and unique place in both aviation and motorsport history, this edition is perfect for collectors who are passionate about both industries. Each Aviationtag carries with it a legacy of adventure, speed, and excellence that only a machine like G-SMLA could offer. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or a motorsport fan, this limited edition tag connects you to a remarkable piece of history.
